Beauty in the hands of the beholder
"Kids of all ages, from boy scouts to senior citizens can be seen once or twice a week at Lake Highlands North Recreation Center, Either at the potter's wheels or at tables, happily involved with clay and glazes. Guiding all this activity is 37 year old Stephen Sanders, who teaches pottery at both Samuel Grand and Lake Highlands Recreation Center. It is no surprise that he is likeable and talented, but what is unusual about the former NTSU art and advertising major is that he cannot see his work or the creations of his students. In 1971 he was a year and a half away from a BFA degree when a truck accident left him blind and in a coma. These days having a paid vocation can be no small accomplishment even for the non-handicapped, and for Stephen the difficulties are still greater. Even so, Stephen likes his work enough that the obstacles he has to face are worth it. Although he enjoys working with all ages, he particularly likes children. "I'm often reminded of Art Linkletter's book Kids Say the Darndest Things," says Stephen when he talks about his experiences with kids. |
